Notes for Margaret CROCKET

General Note
Jessie's twin. Presumably, when she acted as witness to Ellenora's marriage, Margaret was with her at Byrom Street in Liverpool. As she still bore her maiden name, she had not yet married Mr Dutton, the master mariner. Maybe she was courting.

It is worth noting that Thomas Henry Lello's older brother George Lello was in charge of a boarding house at Byrom Street in the 1881 census.

By the time of the 1871 census at Terregles much had changed. James, her father, was now '80', claiming to have been born in Kirkmahoe. Jean (called Jane) was still, unmarried at home, as was William. Margaret was visiting and now married, her surname being Dutton and her husband a 'master mariner'. She had brought her baby Helen Jessie Dutton, born in England, with her.

Marriage: Sept. Quarter, 1868. Volume 8, p. 5621, West Derby.

Janet/Jessie, mother of the family, appeared in the 1881 census in England at the home of her daughter Margaret, incorrectly transcribed as Dalton. Margaret's husband was in port at Bootle, nearby, on board his ship. With them is Margaret's widowed mother. She did not stay on there.

Margaret DALTON Wife (Head) M Female 39 Scotland Seamans Wife

Jessie DALTON Daur Female 10 Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Jessie CROCKET Mother W Female 71 Scotland Annuitant

Source Information: Dwelling 4 Dumbarton St, Walton On Hill, Lancashire, England

Dumbarton Street is a reasonable walk to the docks at Bootle. These are now the departure point for the P&O ferry to Ireland. Margaret's sister Eleanora was not far away and at one time lived close to Bootle.

The 1901 census (ref. RG 13/3323) gives an entry that could be mistakenly construed to be our Margaret: Margaret Dutton 64 born Scotland in Chester Bowdon Living On Own Means. The address is 108 Stamford Road, Glen Morg, in Altrincham, at Bowdon St Mary, North Ward, Chester. Also in the house are two servants and Annie B. Dutton, Daughter, single, age 26. This girl, though, was born to another couple, wife from Paisley, husband Richard, so we still haven't found Margaret.

Her death has not been located with certainty. This is a fair match, but she must have moved out of Liverpool. Deaths Sep 1902

Dutton Margaret 72 Bucklow 8a 97. Bucklow is in outer Manchester and covers Wilmslow, where her sister lived.
