In 1841 in the Caerlaverock census Robert appears at Greenhead as a farmer, aged 60. Also in
the house is his sister Agnes, aged 65, and his niece Agnes, aged 10 and nephew John, aged
8. There is a female servant, aged 25, Margaret Stewart. Greenhead still stands, now with no
name, as a line of cottages before the arch on the left-hand side of the approach into the
grounds of Caerlaverock castle. In the 1851 census Robert, as a retired farmer, was head of house at Castlewood Cottage in Caerlaverock. Castlewood Cottage still stands at the south-west corner of the wood around the castle, on the bend in the road as it sweeps west. In the house with him were his four unmarried sisters, ranging from 64 years to 79. There is no suggestion he ever married. It is a truly remarkable thing to see an ageing family where only one appeared to have married, and then late, ie James their brother. As his death is not on the OPR, it is assumed he died before 1855, when statutory registration began. |
