Ludicrous? No. There are predators out there ready to hijack your family history. It can be very upsetting. It can do things to your blood pressure and keep you awake at night.
I know. I've seen it happen to gentle, elderly people who don't deserve it.
It begins with being traced, perhaps through the Internet, through telephone books, electoral rolls, word of mouth.
Approached by letter and sometimes direct by telephone. Sometimes a knock on the door.
All take and no give. I've even heard of family papers filched away secretly, gone for ever.
Or if there's any 'give', it's with strings attached.
It can be never ending, phone calls, buddy-buddy talk, to see what more you know. But once you have no further use, you're dumped, stone cold.
