The hamlet of Carville, near Hermes, is mentioned in the Beauvais de Croisettes genealogy in the mid-1400s then not again. It lies close to Hermes, on the opposite and north side of the D12 south east out of Beauvais, as it snakes east from Hermes. Map courtesy www.multimap.com. Click to get a better image.

Whether Carville was simply swallowed up into Hermes, or whether someone else enjoyed its benefits, is not known – fiefs could change hands at the drop of a hat, be confiscated, passed down, or lost at cards.

The current-day Carville is a tiny cluster of a few houses on a slope near fields that run up to the vast Forêt Dominale de Hez-Froidmont, which includes a whole patch of timber named Les Croissettes. There are quite a few of these dotted around, so if you fancy a forest walk, then keep an eye open for them on the more detailed maps, the 'blue' series. Otherwise, you can't drive up to them unless in an off-the-road vehicle or on a quad bike.
