Notes for George GREENWOOD

General Note
Royston is in South Yorkshire. If the Greenwoods were migrating to the cities for work they would have gone almost certainly to the nearest: Nottingham or Barnsley. George might have been a local boy who had gone to the city for work. Rachel could have been the Rachel born a few years before George in the neighbouring village of Darton. This is accordingly put in, with the usual cautions.

So how did George Greenwood meet Rachel Addey and marry her in Royston? GEORGE GREENWOOD Marriage: RACHEL ADDEY Family 24 JUL 1785 Royston, Yorkshire, England. She might have been in service in Royton, or they might have met through mutual friends. Darton is a couple of miles from Royton, so this seems a fair assumption.

This may check out, but why is it not on the IGI transcription for the internet, rather than in an LDS entry, especially since the IGI date band covers this alleged event, ie 1720-1812? If anyone can show me the proof, please contact me as shown. If we suppose that the LDS entry is correct, then perhaps the date of baptism shown here is also correct: there was a George Greenwood baptised in the village on 11 OCT 1766, father James.

However, there were many George Greenwoods born in the area, all within striking distance of Barnsley, Dewsbury and neighbouring villages. I see now way of proving which is which. Suffice it to say, it looks as though the Addey family and the Greenwoods were local and from villages around Barnsley.
