Reg was born in Romford, Essex, (reference September quarter, volume 4a, p. 587) after his
parents gave up coping with the climate in Penang (and sick children) and opted for the milder
climate of England. The Romford registration was created 1st July 1837. Sub-districts : Barking Town; Hornchurch; Ilford; Romford. GRO volumes : XII (1837-51); 4a (1852-1930). Barking, Cranham, Dagenham, Great Warley, Havering-atte-Bower, Hornchurch, Ilford, Noak Hill, Rainham, Romford, Upminster, Wennington. Registers now divided between Havering, Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge and Brentwood districts. It is possible that the Watcham family had moved (as did many better-off families) to the new housing developments along that strip of Essex, and that Alice Minnie returned 'home' for the birth of this child. There two more brothers were born before Reginald, and in the face of European hostilities leading to the outbreak of World War I, and Frederick's fear of being recruited to serve in the navy, the family left for Australia, settling at first at Ringwood where Freda was born. Reg and his wife Jessie Lawrence had no children. His death was registered as having occurred in Bairnsdale, reg. no. 24091. There is a photograph in the family taken at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight around 1910 showing two small boys with a woman not yet identified. It is highly likely that these were Reg and his brother Charlie. |
