Notes for Charles Herbert [Ernest] ANDREWS

General Note
There is considerable confusion here. He was known as Ernest Charles. We have seen the birth certificate: Births Dec 1875 ANDREWS Charles Herbert Poplar 1c 603. This child was registered by his mother, her name being given as 'formerly Wohlman' with only 1 'n'. His father was a 'stationer', and the family were living then at 7 Tredegar Road, Bow. She registered his birth 11th October 1875.

The birth date given here is from family records, while another family member gives his date of birth as 1877 rather than 1875. There is a story in the family about there having been another child that died.

In the 1881 census we have Charles aged 5, called Charles E. Andrews, at Ward's Villa, Hainault Road, Leyton, said to be born at Stratford (ie Bow). At the 1901 census he was living at South Shoebury, aged 23 (ie born around 1878), and described as having been born in Middx. Bow, occupation Book Keeper. Ernest was the informant at the death of his father Charles Andrews. He was living at the time at Hampstead (see note on Charles Andrews).

This is the only birth that matches as at August 2005 on the FreeBMD site: Births Mar 1879 Andrews Ernest Poplar 1c 627. This could mean he was born the year before. But none of this matches.

Ernest married 15th June 1905. Registration from FreeBMD: Marriages Jun 1905 Andrews Ernest Charles Hackney 1b 802 ROBINSON Rose. The certificate shows he was a 'bachelor, printer, of "Kenwood", 3 North Avenue, Westcliffe on Sea, father Charles George Andrews, printer. His wife was 20, daughter of Edward Robinson, Herbalist, living at 38 Morning Lane, Hackney. The marriage took place at the Parish Church, Hackney.

Ernest and Rose left England with two of their daughters around 1947, for South Africa, all going to live in Hermanus in Cape Town. Rose and Ernest, on the insistence of his children Olive and Max, left for Auckland in New Zealand in 1959. They lived with the Cattle family until their deaths. There is also confusion about Ernest's date of death, one record saying 24th March 1976, in New Zealand, and another saying 1969, also in New Zealand.

He is said to have worked with his brother Percy in the publishing business in South Africa, but split with Percy due to a disagreement.

On June 20th 1905, he and Rose send a postcard to her brother Curtis from Torquay. "Dear Curtis. We are having an awfully jolly time. Doyou remember this dear old Church, dear? Hope you are well. With love from your loving brother & sister Rose & Ern." The card was addressed to Hackney, but forward to 11 Hamilton Gardens, Highbury.

From Dartmought, 22nd June 1905.

In 1906, July 10th, they wrote from London to 'Father'. "Ernest and Erroll & I have just returned home from Margate 9 o'clock. we went by Koh-i-nor 11 o'clock this morning, it was a lovely day. Mother is looking brown & well & is feeling much better. Baby's not cried all the time. We were just in time for dinner 1.20. They were so pleased to see us. Many thanks for letter. Fond love your loving children , Rose & Ern."

They also sent another card on 23rd July 1906. "My Dearest Parents. Just a line to ask you if you will secure a bed-sitting room for us for two nights, Monday & Tuesday or 1 bedroom and arrnage for us to have breakfast about 7.45 as near station as possible, as I think of coming up for (if fine) day or two & bring father back with us to mind the baby? Hoping you are all well & to see you on Monday, with fondest love, your loving children Ern & Rose. I am not sure what time we shall start, about 9 o'clock I think."

He and Rose sent a postcard to Mr Robinson, 16 August 1907 from Marion Hotel, Ostend: "Dear Pater, We went to Kursaal last night "real great". Am going to Blankenburg to Battle of Flowers today and to the races of Ostend. Weather is lovely. Love from Rose and Self."

An address for 'Mrs Andrews' in 1906 was 'Bragelome, Beedon Avenue, Wescliff Park, Essex.'

On August 2nd 1908, Rose wrote to her father from 'Exhibition, 2o/c': "Dear Daddy, Just dined, now going to look around. I shall come to Hackney tonight. Try & secure room please if you can. Fondest love, Yours Rose." It is hard to know what the Exhibition was - perhaps the Scottish National Exhibition at Saughton Hall Estate, now Saughton Park, or the 1908 exhibition at White City. It is assumed this was a telegram.
