Births in South Africa: Darcy, Selina Adelaide, 1903, page 181, GRO Army birth indices. Was in Penang in December 1912. Mary was known as May. Her birth was registered at Oldham, December quarter 1873, volume 8d, p. 666. May was staying with her nephew William Charles, his wife Annie, and their two children, in the 1901 census of Acton, at 1 Nemoure Road. Her name was so appallingly written on the census form it bears no resemblance to her proper surname, looking instead like Davie. The form gave her occupation as School Mistress, born in Royton. She sent a photograph to her sister Ellie, dated 2nd April 1907, presumably her wedding date. Notes from Katherine Ellis (formely Katherine Daniel): Robert D'Arcy managed the de Beer diamond mines near Jaggerfanstein in South Africa. He and May Daniel married in South Africa. Robert bought a farm outside Jaggerfenstein because the city was not conducive to May's health, not to work the farm as Robert was not a farmer. May was teaching in the Lake District in England when she got the opportunity to go to South Africa as a Headmistress to a school of 'dark' children. She brought Katherine back a doll which the children had made & brought her own children to England once, but they developed Chickenpox. Robert & May had 2 children, Richard & Robert. The youngest being about 9 yrs younger than Taffy [Kathleen]. In South Africa she taught in the detention centres, taking on a welfare and go-between role with internees. She was known as 'Teacher Daniel'. At some point, May took her little boys back to England to meet their grandparents. There is a photograph of them (or maybe their cousins, children of Captain Fred Daniel) at Ventnor on the promenade. She also went to Penang -- her nephew Trevor was sent 10/- for Christmas in 1912 through his father William, who was working in Penang. May died young in her early fifties from cancerous fibroids in her womb. She lingered a year confined to bed. Her husband found a special English nurse to look after her and had a bed made with wheels so she could be wheeled into the garden every day. Her sons were in boarding school at the time. She had a happy marriage and seemed was happy through her illness until the last short time before her death. Taffy met the de Beer family who were 'very unpretentious'. Their children were very interested in the architecture of England.
