Births Sep 1852 Andrews, Amelia, St Giles, 1b 297. Her marriage registration, 18 July 1872
Kensington 1a 194 gives her age as 'full age'. The groom was a bachelor and Leatherseller
of 3 Clarence Place. His father was George, a Greengrocer. The marriage was by Banns at the
parish church of Kensington. The witnesses were Thomas Parsons and Annie Wade. Before her marriage, Amelia Sophia Andrews was a witness at the marriage of Charles George Andrews. She might be expected to have been his sister, either older or younger, and so it proved to be by sending for her birth certificate. In 1871 she was shortly to be married. We have a choice. Either she was living with a widow, Mary Ann Smith, in Hackney on the top floor of 7 Beckford Place, Helsford Road, Kingsland, Hackney St John. Her aunt was 48, a 'bottle dealer', born in Middlesex, and Amelia was unmarried, an unemployed servant, also born in London, Middlesex. Or, she was the Amelia Andrews, daughter of James Andrews, a greengrocer, living in St Luke. This looks wrong, as this Amelia was at home with her family. Most likely is the Amelia Andrews, age 21, living as a lodger at 13 Caledonian Crescent, born in Islington, and working as a Boot Machinist. This is a better fit by far. By 1881, while Andrew Swift Andrews was still at home with George James and his mother Sarah Sophia (nee Swift), Amelia was now married. She was no longer in London, but living in Sussex. Here is the 1881 census entry showing her new family at 35 West Buildings: George PURSER Head M Male 29 Worthing, Sussex, England Leather Seller Amelia S. In the 1891 census for West Sussex, Worthing, at Bermondsey House, Crescent Road, they have her widower father George James with them. Amelia's last child has by now been born. George is a 'leather seller', as before. The family is living at Bermondsey House, Crescent Road. The family also appear in the 1901 census, now at 4 and 5, Crescent Road, Holy Trinity, Worthing. George is by now a Leather and Book Seller. George junior is no longer in Worthing, but in London, while his brother Herbert, aged 17, is working as an Assistant in the Book Shop. Harriet, aged 15, is there too. It is doubtful that all of these children are theirs, but somme will have been. Those we are certain of have an *: Births Jun 1878 Purser *??
