Notes for Henry TAYLOR

General Note
Henry's address was Ravendsdale, parish of Mansfield, Nottingham. He was a butcher, like his father before him. His will and various documents to do with his property are part of the Portland (London) Collection lodged with the University of Nottingham. The documents contain mention of his sister Ann and her husband and brother-in-law Charles.

His will was dated 19th November 1816. Here are the contents:

Copy will (19 Nov. 1816) of Henry Taylor of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire; n.d. [post 1816] (7 ff, paper)

Testator: Henry Taylor of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, gent.

Bequeaths £ 50 to his executors, to be paid (along with the interest accumulated in the meantime) to William Allwood, grandson of his half-brother Isaac Taylor, when he comes of age.

Bequeaths £ 100 to his foster-son John Walker, to be paid to him at the discretion of his executors, between the ages of 21 and 25.

Bequeaths £ 40 to his servant Ann Swift; £ 50 to his godson John Buckles; and £ 10 to each of his executors.

Bequeaths the interest on £ 1,000 owing to him on a mortgage to his wife Mary and her assigns for her life, and then to his niece Hannah Storer (widow of John Storer of Scarcliff in Derbyshire) and her assigns for her life. After both their deaths, bequeaths the £ 1,000 to Thomas Farnsworth, son of Hannah Storer by her former husband George Farnsworth.

Bequeaths the residue of his personal estate (after payment of the mortgage debt owing on the Ravensdale estate) to his wife.

Devises a copyhold close of land at Clown in the Manor of Bolsover in Derbyshire to his executors, upon trust to sell the land and to add the purchase money to his personal estate.

Devises a messuage, garden, stable and midding place in Wass Lane in Mansfield to his wife and her heirs.

Devises a messuage and garden in Cockpit in Mansfield, and two pingles and a stable in Westfield Lane in Mansfield to Isaac Taylor and Hannah his wife and their assigns for their lives; after the death of the survivor, devises the messuage and garden to their grand-daughter Mary Allwood and her heirs, and the pingles and stable to their grandson William Allwood and his heirs.

Devises his freehold estate in the parish of Mansfield called Ravensdale to his executors, during the lives of his sister Hannah Padley (widow of John Padley of Mansfield) and his sister Mary, wife of Thomas Drury of Mansfield, upon trust: Charges the estate with the payment of an annuity of £ 40 to Hannah Padley and £ 20 to Mary Drury; directs that the residue of the rents and profits be divided into three equal parts and paid to the children of Mary Drury, the children of his late sister Ann de la Croissette, and the children of his niece Mary, wife of David Day of Papplewick Cotton Mill.

After the death of the survivor of his two sisters, devises the Ravensdale estate as follows: The messuage and outbuildings (except for the Nether Barn at the bottom of the yard), with the orchard, garden and croft and closes called Benty Close, Hovel Close, Upper Meadow, Neather Meadow and Plantation, to John Drury of Worksop in Nottinghamshire, laborer (one of the children of Mary Drury) and his heirs and assigns. Charges the land with the payment of annuities of £ 10 each to John's brother George Drury and sister Sarah, wife of George Mason of Mansfield, well sinker.

Closes of land called Hanging Bank, Spring Hill, Cow Pasture, Nether Pobley Hill and Over Pobley Hill, to all the children of his late sister Ann de la Croissette and their heirs and assigns, as tenants in common.

Closes of land called Shaw Close, Nether Cow Bank, Upper Cow Bank and Burrow Bright, together with the Nether Barn, to all the children of his niece Mary Day and their heirs and assigns, as tenants in common.

Executors: William Dodson of Felly Mill in Nottinghamshire, farmer, and Joseph Butterworth of Mansfield, hosier.
