Mary was born in Sutton Ashfield, according to the faded entry in the marriage register for
St Mary's Parish church in Nottingham, although she was living in Nottingham like Isaac at
the time of her marriage. It could be that these families had houses in the new and fashionable
Georgian area near the castle and St Mary's church. Her marriage entry for October 1736 reads: 25 Isaac Taylor of Mansfield & Mary Orrige of Sutton in Ashfield both in this Parish. By Licence. Mr Ed. Berdmore. Mary came from a family of local butchers and married one. She died aged 38 in 1749 and was buried in Mansfield churchyard. Her burial stone was there in 1800, according to "A history of Mansfield and its environs" by W. Harrod, published in 1801. This makes the IGI individual record submitted by a member of the LDS church incorrect, where it is suggested she was born in 1715, rather than 1710/1 as the burial record indicates, although the licence application suggests she was 21 in 1736, unless this has been misread when transcribed. The following were found on http://www.oldnotts.co.uk/data/graves1801.htm#T Mary wife of Isaac TAYLOR died 1749 aged 38. Isaac TAYLOR died 1784 aged 69. (Tomb in churchyard) Sam. son of Isaac TAYLOR died 1774 aged 18. (Head stone) Eliz. wife of H. TAYLOR died 1787 aged 31 (Flat stone) Jos. TAYLOR died 1784 aged 31. (Head stone) John TAYLOR died 1791 aged 29. (Head stone) The Bishops Transcripts from Sutton in Ashfield from 1627 to 1823 show dozens of Taylors and Ordidges. Ordige Baptisms at Sutton-in-Ashfield Parish Church - search period 1720 backwards, looking for the baptism of Mary Ordige. Unfortunately, both the registers and the bishop's transcripts were incomplete around this period. Using both and working back year-by-year the following, a poor haul, emerged: Date of Baptism Childs Forename(s) Details Notes 09? Jun 1719(20?) Totally obscured daughter of Samuel Ordige & Hannah his wife Unsure of date - day and year. See note 1. 27 Feb 1719 Elizabeth Samuel Ordish & Hannah This entry came from the bishop's transcripts. The primary record in the register did not reflect this. |
