Notes for John LA CROISSETTE

General Note
John's birth date is difficult to distinguish on the record held in Westminster Archives, on the St Ann's film, volume one. But his baptism date is clearly 6th August, as are the names of his parents. He was baptised John Lecroesette, of John and Catherine. It looks most likely that the date '24th' falls under a list headed July.

He married Gabrielle Neau (also written as Now or Neu) at a 'Fleet' marriage. His name is recorded as John Lacroiette, fan stick maker of Marylebone. His bride is writen as Gabriel, spinster, at 'Crooks'. Crook or Crooke was a Fleet clergyman. There are three references in all.

The family Bible at Benfleet gives his birth as 24th July at '5 O'clock in the morning on Friday.' He was baptised by Mr Bundy, Minister of St Ann's Westminster and his name was given as John La Croissette. If John's mother was, as if believed (Catherine Thabary) French, he was of full French extraction.

Although his son John (baptised when his father was only 18 or 19) was baptised at St Martin in the Fields, no marriage can be traced for John and Gabriel. It may surface as time goes on.

There is a reference to his death in Huguenot Publications LII, 4th series, page 9. It says: DELACROISETTE (DELACROISETTE, de LA CROISETTE), Jean. Inmate. e. July 11th, 1789 (l; July 20). B/A "a lui meme" d. Dec. 7, 1792. This means he was incapable of supporting himself due to his age and various infirmities. In short, his family put him into care as too difficult to cater for in his old age. It is worth noting that this official record recognises his father as having been a Picardie native (even if baptised in London).

It is now known whether John Gabrielle.

It seems possible that this John might have had more children: there is an Elizabeth DelaCroissette who married William Rayner, 11 February 1793, at Saint Botolph Without Aldersgate, London. As it is known that Elizabeth could not have been a sibling of John Isaac De La Croissette (as their mother only had three children according to the affidavits filed in the University of Nottingham archiveds on the Portland Estate), she might either have been a child of a first marriage, or a cousin, perhaps the daughter of the Charles Cross who gave John Isaac the family bible, or of Robert.
