Both dates, birth and baptism, on the IGI. Witness to his marriage was his sister Elizabeth
Davis, who put her mark. Henry moved to Crewkerne with his wife and son Edwin, where they appear in the 1841 census, both working as wheelwrights: Edward Davis abt 1826 Crewkerne Somerset Henry Davis abt 1801 Crewkerne Somerset Mary Davis abt 1806 Crewkerne Somerset In the 1851 census, Henry and Mary are still in Crewkerne, but Edward is now in his own dwelling with his family. Henry is described as a Wheelwright and Innkeeper, the latter a job shared with his neighbour who runs the White Horse Inn next door, while Henry runs the Cross Keys Inn, Chard Road. Also in Crewkerne is Thomas Davis, probably Henry's brother, also born in Ottery. It looks as if there was a mass migration from Ottery and the Honiton area to Crewkerne of the Davis clan. Thomas's wife was born in Crewkerne. They have Henry, Louisa and William with them, the first two born in Ottery. From the gap in ages, it looks as though Thomas moved to Crewkerne on the death of his first wife then remarried to Ann, age 38. Young William is 6. Thomas is a Carpenter (Journeyman). The other likely brother in the 1851 census is still in Ottery at Wiggston, William born c. 1805, an agricultural labourer with a large family. In the 1861 census, Henry has moved to Cheddon Fitzpaine, about 4 miles north east of Taunton. He and Mary have with them a 'grandson', Frederick Henry Davis, born 1849 in Crewkerne, son of Edward Davis, the blacksmith who went to London. Henry was living at Park Gate and working as a carpenter. The grandson was at school. He later became a Builder's Managing Clerk, living in Hastings with his family (1881 census). Henry and Mary are still at the same address in the 1871 census (under the name DAVES on ancestry.co.uk. They have been informed.). He was still working as a carpenter. Mary, this time, is said to be 12 years younger than Henry, surely a mistake. Henry's death: Deaths Dec 1875 DAVIS Henry 74 Taunton 5c 277 Mary's has not been tracked down - there were several possibilities, but none in Taunton, suggesting she might have gone to live with a family member and maybe died outside the area. |
