Notes for John LACROISSETTE

General Note
One account has his birth as 1749, but his baptism is now on the IGI so this has to be wrong. JOHN LACROISETTE Christening: 26 AUG 1742 Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster, London, England Father: JOHN LACROISETTE Mother: GABRIEL Source Information: Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type: C001457 1732 - 1751 0561142 Film 6901249 Film Sheet: 00. His birth is the only listed to these parents. Certainly, family records do not suggest he had any siblings.

He was married by Licence, signing himself clearly John La Croissett while his wife also signed her own name. The witnesses were 'Alexson Derswell and Hannah Taylor,' the latter the bride's sister. His marriage to Ann(e) Taylor was the subject of a personal appearance, London Diocese, Allegations MF 10091/123 - 1770 (A-L), to be found in the Guildhall Library. He signed himself: John La Croissett. He was 28 years as was his bride to be. The IGI entry shows this: JOHN LE CROISSETT Marriage: 09 AUG 1770 Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London, England.

He was a fan painter, according to baptismal evidence for his children. This was a highly skilled trade, and he might have run a workshop for fans which were in much demand in Britain at that time, along with other oriental paraphernalia that had become fashionable at court. We know from the Portland archives at the University of Nottingham and various affidavits concerning this family that there were only ever three surviving children of his marriage to Ann Taylor.

Regarding the guild of fanmakers see website: http://www.fanmakers.com/history.htm

There is also a thriving museum of fans in Greenwich: http://www.fan-museum.org/

His father was a 'fan stick maker'.
