James or was he really John, was a 'Professed Cook'. He died before his son's marriage in 1881
and apparently before 1871 as his widow is alone with Thomas, although Frederick is on the
Strand Union Workhouse. It is not known where the rest were. Marriage to Mary Thomas, both unmarried. James was an 'Office Clerk', address 38 Belvedere Row, Lambeth. His father was James Allen, an Office Clerk, while her own father was Thomas Thomas, a farmer. This sounds wrong, although Professed Cook and Office Clerk could easily be confused. An alternative is that he changed his profession. I am not sure I believe this. In the 1861 census as 'John'.
