A hint about where she came from may be contained in the 1851 census where her son Edward is
working in Crewkerne, with an apprentice 'nephew', Thomas Pike, age 16, who comes from Pyne,
Devon. In the 1841 census there were two Pike families in Hontion, James and Samuel in the same household, both agricultural labourers. Maybe they were brothers of Mary. There was a John Pike from Honiton, Devon, a bricklayer in Finsbury in the 1851 census, born 1794. Could this be an older brother? Is this her death? Deaths Mar 1878 DAVIS Mary 73 Shepton Mallet 5c 419 Or this: Deaths Mar 1880 Davis Mary 76 Bridgwater 5c 303 From the IGI, children baptised on the Upton Pyne register: JOHN PIKE - Christening: 13 APR 1834 Upton Pyne, Devon, England WILLIAM PIKE - Christening: 27 NOV 1803 Upton Pyne, Devon, England MARY PIKE -: Female Christening: 16 JUN 1805 Upton Pyne, Devon, England ELIZABETH PIKE - Christening: 05 APR 1807 Upton Pyne, Devon, England JAMES PECK - Christening: 06 JAN 1745 Upton Pyne, Devon, England Feniton, where Henry and Mary married, is close to Ottery St Mary, the village where Henry came from. The marriage took place at St Andrew's. Henry's sister Elizabeth was a witness, marking with an 'x'. Looking at neighbouring villages for births, there is a collection of children in Ottery St Mary born to Gilbert and Susannah Peck. The children's father was described as Gilbert Peck or Pock, and their mother as Susanna Needs or Tucker. 3. JOHN POCK OR PECK OR NEEDS OR TUCKER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 20 NOV 1802 Ottery Saint Mary, Devon, England 4. WILLIAM POCK OR PECK OR NEEDS OR TUCKER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 20 NOV 1802 Ottery Saint Mary, Devon, England 5. SUSANNA POCK OR PECK OR NEEDS OR TUCKER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 20 NOV 1802 Ottery Saint Mary, Devon, England The only Mary Peck here is the wrong generation to have married Henry Davis (1822), however, there is an LDS entry for a Mary, perhaps suggesting she was encouraged to be baptised before she married. The parish is right the timing is right. MARY PECK Birth: 22 JUL 1801 Christening: 20 DEC 1822 Ottery Saint Mary, Devon, England Father: GILBERT PECK Family Mother: SUSANNA |
