Her birth registration: Oldham 8d, p. 718, September quarter 1880. At the time of the 1881 census she was 8 months and living at Royton at Elly Clough House which still stands and is now the Greyhound pub. Her address at 1901 census was 13 Leybourne Road, Walthamstow, Essex, living as a single woman with her parents. Her nephew Edwin (Ernest, aged 8) and married brother Edwin were there at the time from their home in the Isle of Wight. Ethel's great-nephew in Australia, said in a letter that Ethel and Leslie Miles went to Penang and married there. They plainly left Penang and headed for Australia. Ethel is referred to in Fred Daniel's letter of 1935, as 'Auntie Ethel', visiting him at Lakes Entrance, Victoria, from Sydney with Tom, Sheila and another relative. Fred's letter also refers to Ethel living with Tom and Sheila at 'Clevedon', Bayswater, Victoria, The Basins, until Les(?), Ethel's husband, was due back on leave (?) in August 1935. Fred also refers to Tom, Ethel's son, and says he might have given up 'the sheep in Queensland'. Edwin Daniel, Ethel's oldest brother, used to write to her in 'Siam', ie Thailand. Anyone with the right details on her death, please get in touch. |
