In the 1861 census. Address, 58 Market Street, Marylebone. Richard Butler, Head, Smith, 50,
born Devon, Witheridge [As a Smith he could easily have been in the Army or working on a garrison
in Scotland when Mary was born in Stornaway.] Elizabeth Butler, Wife, 53, Middx. Paddington.
Richard Downey, Grandson, 3, ditto. William Thompson, 23, Visitor, Mason, ditto [He obviously
started out that way, which gives me hope for fixing on his Glemsford family]. Mary Ann Thompson,
28, Visitor, Married, ditto. Emma Thompson, 1, Visitor, ditto. Alexander Morris, 23, Lodger,
Coach Trimmer, Scotland [should this have applied to Mary Ann?]. William Blick, 25, Lodger,
Carpenter, ? There is something pretty strange about these ages if William was born in 1840
and Mary Ann around the same time. Birth, after a search of 1840 registrations for Sudbury area, December quarter 1840, volume XII, p.402. This would match census data, as he would have been due to turn 41 later in the year during 1881 and 61 later in 1901. This was not necessarily wrong, and a search for the whole of 1839, 1841 and 1842 does not produce another Sudbury William Thompson. Impossible to find in the 1851 census. Maybe he was in the army which could be how he met his future wife. Or he had already left home: there is a Thompson family in the village, father Thomas born in Bures, Suffolk, mother Elizabeth born in Hartest, son Reuben age 14, agricultural labourer and daughter Jane, age 11, a hair drawer, both children born in Glemsford. Another family, with no William: Alice Thompson abt 1800 Melford, Suffolk, England Wife Elizabeth Thompson abt 1834 Glemsford, Suffolk, England Daughter Emma Thompson abt 1836 Glemsford, Suffolk, England Daughter Thomas Thompson abt 1801 Glemsford, Suffolk, England Head Glemsford Suffolk Marriage on the IGI, which checks against the 1861 census: Husband WILLIAM THOMPSON Marriage: 17 JUL 1859 Saint James, Paddington, London, England. Father: THOMAS THOMPSON Wife MARY ANN BUTLER Marriage: 17 JUL 1859 Saint James, Paddington, London, England Father: RICHARD BUTLER. This appears to be registered Sep quarter 1859, Kensington 1a, p. 132. On the marriage certificate of Emily, William's daughter, his occupation was given as 'greengrocer'. In the 1871 census at 1 Boston Terrace,Islington St George, Finsbury, with no sign of Emily although there is an Emma J in a boarding school in Lewisham. Maybe this is where she developed her interest in cookery: Margaret H Thompson 1865 St Pancras, Middlesex, England Daughter Islington St George London Mary Thompson 1841 Scotland Wife Islington St George London Sarah A Thompson 1870 Islington, Middlesex, England Daughter Islington St George London William Thompson 1841 Glemsford Head Islington St George London William H Thompson 1867 St Pancras, Middlesex, England Son Islington St George London On the 1881 census, with daughter Emily not at home: William THOMPSON Head M Male 40 Suffolk, England Greengrocer Mary THOMPSON Wife M Female 40 Scotland (shown on the 1901 as Stornoway, and her age as 7 years more than William) Greengrocer Margaret THOMPSON Daur Female 16 St Pancras, Middlesex, England Scholar William THOMPSON Son Male 14 St Pancras, Middlesex, England Scholar Sarah THOMPSON Daur Female 10 St Pancras, Middlesex, England Scholar Source Information: 255 Junction Rd London, Middlesex, England On the 1901 census: William Thompson, 60, Suffolk Glemsford. London, Islington, Greengrocer but Mary was 67! It's still the same woman. Deaths Sep 1909 THOMPSON William James 69 Islington 1b 110. A birth certificate has been sent by the GRO which could be right, but until we locate his daughter's birth certificate, then his marriage to Emily's mother, we cannot be sure about William's birth. Only his marriage will give his father's name. The certificate is perfect on the age, but there were several Thompson families in Glemsford at the time. |
