His birth place is variously shown as Southwark, Clerkenwell, Strand. It sems likely he had
not much idea where he was born, as there appears to have been a breakdown in the life of the
family when his father died. His marriage certificate gives Frederick's father as James [not John], deceased, Professed Cook, and Maria Alice's as David William Hoppus, deceased, Foreman to a Rope Manufacturer. One wonders if he really knew his father's name, or whether the enumerator in the 1861 census mistransribed his notes. Other births: FROM THE GRO 1837ONLINE. None in 1856. In the 1861 census with his father as 'John', and two of the children, Frederick being one of them, born in Southwark. It is possible he forgot this, or never knew it, especially if he ran away from home or was sent away after his father died (see entry below for the 1861 census) for 12 Angel Court. The quality of the fiche is terrible, but it looks as thought he was a packer, which figures.
