Notes for Elizabeth WOHLMANN

General Note
It is presumed she was the child of the couple to whom she is attributed, as the only Wohlmanns (apart from John Christian Wohlmann) having children at this time.

Traced in St Giles Without Cripplegate in the 1841 census. Samuel was 45 (ie anywhere between 45 and 49, ie born 1791-1796) and working as a Cabinet Maker, as was his son, age 15. They also had a son of 8, Edwin. Elizabeth was also 45, working as a flower maker. Daughters were Elizabeth 13, Katherine and Emma age 15, Hester 14, Clara 12, Mary 6 and Fanny 4. Only Mary and Fanny were still at school.

The marriage appears on page 98 of the parish register, to Samuel Allen, a bachelor. Elizabeth Wohlmann signed her own name and was a spinster. They were married by Banns by B. Mathias, Rector. Witnesses, George Shilling and Elizabeth Matherson.

In the 1851 census, Elizabeth was already a widow. Her household with no sign of the daughter Esther:

Clara Allen abt 1831 Cripplegate, Middlesex, England Daughter St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

Edwin Allen abt 1833 Cripplegate, Middlesex, England Son St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

Elizabeth Allen abt 1796 Shoreditch, Middlesex, England Head St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

Elizabeth Allen abt 1830 Cripplegate, Middlesex, England Daughter St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

Fanny Allen abt 1837 Cripplegate, Middlesex, England Daughter St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

June Lambertus [Jane, ie Catherine Pemberton] Allen abt 1825 Cripplegate, Middlesex, England Daughter St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

Mary Allen abt 1834 Cripplegate, Middlesex, England Daughter St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

Samuel Allen abt 1823 Cripplegate, Middlesex, England Son St Giles Cripplegate Middlesex

She appears in the 1861 census as a 'haberdasher' born in Shoreditch, a widow, age 64. In the household at 25 St John's Road, Goswell Street, Clerkenwell, is her married daughter Catherine, and unmarried children Samuel and Edwin, both cabinet makers, and Fanny, age 24 a Book Folder, while the girls are flower makers: Elizabeth and Clara, like their married sister Catherine. She is no longer with her family in the 1871 census.

Is this her death? Deaths Dec 1866 Allen, Elizabeth, 72 Clerkenwell 1b 472. If so, it is a perfect match for what we know of her.

The Wohlmann men were cabinet makers, so it makes sense for Elizabeth to have married one. Samuel Allen, according to the censuses was a fancy cabinet maker.
