In the 1841 census, hard to be sure we have found her, although there is an Amelia Swift, age
17, a female servant, born in Middlesex (true), working at the house of a Grocer in St Bride
Precinct, the right area for her to be in position to meet her future husband. A more likely
age is this one: Amelia Swift, age 15, in Ludgate, female servant. Another, same age, is in
Marylebone. From the 1861 census, now married to her brother-in-law, with Arthur from William's first marriage: Amelia Andrews abt 1825 Clerkenwell Wife St Luke Middlesex Arthur Andrews abt 1849 St Bride's Son St Luke Middlesex (birth registration Births Jun 1849 Andrews, Arthur Frederick, W London 2 270) Elisabeth Andrews abt 1860 St Luke, Middlesex, England Daughter St Luke Middlesex Emma Andrews abt 1857 St Luke, Middlesex, England Daughter St Luke Middlesex William Andrews abt 1820 Bloomsbury Head St Luke Middlesex William Andrews abt 1858 St Luke, Middlesex, England Son St Luke Middlesex Anne Brown abt 1820 Westbury, Wiltshire, England Visitor St Luke Middlesex Francis Brown abt 1847 Wiltshire, England Son Visitor St Luke Middlesex In the 1871 census at 5 Norman's Buildings, Finsbury no 2 area: Alice Andrews abt 1865 St Luke, Middlesex, England Daughter St Luke London Amelia Andrews abt 1825 Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England Head St Luke London Emma Andrews abt 1857 St Luke, Middlesex, England Daughter St Luke London William Andrews abt 1858 St Luke, Middlesex, England Son St Luke London Jessie Summerfield abt 1870 St Luke, Middlesex, England Nurse Child St Luke London The only Arthur Andrews in the right age bracket, a year or so out, was an unemployed single 'hawker' from St Brides in London. This ties in perfectly with the 1861 census on place of birth. He eventually got out of prison, and in 1891 was in Kettering, then back in London as a chimney sweep for the 1901 census, in Hoxton. In the 1881 census, she was still going strong, with some of the family still at home. Alice was a 'Paper cuff maker' and William a brass turner. Alice Andrews abt 1865 St Lukes, Middlesex, England Daughter 15 Lever St, St Luke, London, England Amelia Andrews abt 1825 Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England Head 15 Lever St, St Luke, London, England William Andrews abt 1858 St Lukes, Middlesex, England Son 15 Lever St, St Luke, London, England Emma was living nearby at 28 Norman's Buildings. In the 1891 census she is sharing two rooms with Alice, still unmarried, at the same address. Alice was a 'Mantle machinist'. William has gone. In 1901, at 15 Fairbanks Street, Hoxton, Shoreditch, in 3 rooms, Alice and Amelia were still alone together, with Alice working as a mantle machinist.
