Notes for Alice Amelia ANDREWS

General Note
Births Sep 1864 ANDREWS Alice Amelia St Luke 1b 621. Her middle name is that of her mother.

Still unmarried and living with her widowed mother at 15 Lever Street, in Finsbury, in the 1891 census, working as a mantle machinist.

In 1901, at 15 Fairbanks Street, Hoxton, Shoreditch, in 3 rooms, Alice and Amelia were still alone together, with Alice working as a mantle machinist.

It looks as though she married once her mother died: Marriages Mar 1902 ANDREWS Alice Amelia Shoreditch 1c 147. Choice of grooms: Edwards Edwin Henry or Lees George Henry.

Attempting to check out which would have been the most likely groom for her:One Edwin Edwards in the 1901 in the area was 47 with a large family at 22 Allerton Street, Shoreditch. This was a good street with the kind of neighbours Alice might have mixed with. He was a 'Cutter & shader, flower work'. The other Edwin, equally likely, was a Sluice Value Examiner. We cannot know until the 1911 census is made available.

The 1901 census presents her with an interesting choice of George Lees:

George Lees 43 Shepton Mallet Somerset Middlesex Paddington Civil Servant Inland Revenue

George Lees 58 Staffs Coppenhall Middlesex Enfield Wheelwright

George Lees 60 Yorks Saddleworth Lancaster Middleton Book Keeper Cotton Mill

George Lees 62 Worcester Northfield Middlesex Finchley Sewerage Labourer

George Lees 67 Walton Northamptonshire Middlesex Paddington Retired School Master

George Lees 70 Enfield Middlesex Middlesex Gunsmith

The first was the most likely. His father was a retired schoolmaster and he was living with his family in 1901, still unmarried.
