The Witts were a long-standing Hampshire family from the area between Andover and Christchurch,
through the New Forest. It is assumed William met her if she went into service in the area
where he was working at the time. They were probably married in the 1830s, so before registration,
and perhaps other children before the birth of Luke in late 1840. According to a RootsWeb site, she was Christened: 15 Aug 1810 Reading St Giles, Berks. I am cautious about this as she stated in the 1861 census that she came from Hampshire. She then says she came from Reading in 1871, so maybe she was actually born in a village near the border. Death: 24 Apr 1874 in Hornchurch, Essex Burial: 30 Apr 1874 Hornchurch, Essex If the Reading baptism is correct, these would be her parents. Father: James WITT b: ABT 1775 Mother: Jane BONNEY. Lydia's sister Kezia married her brother-in-law John Sibthorp, also in Essex. After their mother (who was from a long established Reading family) died in 1812, their father remarried in 1814 it Reading. A brother married at Ringwood in Hampshire. |
