Frederick appears to have registered his daughter Frances under the name his father often used,
De la Croisette. His subsequent children (although there may have been others born in other
parishes and registered elsewhere) went under the name of Lecroissette, as did his nieces and
nephews through his sister Elizabeth. In the family Bible at Benfleet, Frederick is listed by his brother Alfred as Frederick Thomas Lecroissett. He was born at Twenty before 3 OClock in the Morning, and also, like his sister Amelia Diana, Free born of the City. He appears as Frederick Cross in the 1841 census for Plumber Street, St Leonard Shoreditch. He was a 'brush finisher'. Their first two children were born by then. We know that his father set up a brush making enterprise in his last days. Why Frederick emigrated is not known - perhaps he saw an entry in Melbourne for his trade. In the 1851 census for 1 Royal Park Place, Hoxton, Frederick was a 'Brush Manufacturer'. This led the site owner to trace the family in Victoria, starting in 1853. Plainly the informant was guessing about hisparents, and there was some puzzlement about the proper spelling of Croissette. |
