Notes for Ann ALLEN

General Note
Ann Allen (not to be confused with the other one in the family) married in 1847 and can be seen living with Thomas Mansell, a 'hawker' age 34 at 2 Rose Square, St Luke Finsbury in the 1851 census. Ann was 29 and their child Elizabeth 2, born in St Luke. Ann was thus born c. 1821 or 1822. Someone has obtained a baptism certificate for an Ann Allen christened 2 April 1820 at St Lukes old church, father Samuel Allen and mother unknown Elizabeth.

Or was she? In the 1861 census, Thomas Mansell is now a Porter. They have added Caroline 7, Thomas 4 and Mary 3 months. They are living at 4 French Alley, Whitecross Street, St Luke, in a multi-occupancy terrace house. Ann is said to have been born in 1818 (this could also be 1817). In the 1871 census they are still in the same area, living at 9 New Court, Whitcross Street, St Luke Finsbury. Still at home are Caroline and Mary Ann. Ann now states she was born at 'Noble Street, St Lukes', and that she is 53 while Thomas George Mansell is 58 and now a 'horse hair worker'.

By now, she would have cleared out her mother's house and got the Wohlmann family papers.

This would indeed make her born in 1818. The following fits perfectly: ANN ALLEN - International Genealogical Index Birth: 31 AUG 1818 Christening: 02 APR 1820 Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury to Samuel and Elizabeth Allen. She is the only child baptised there to this couple. One other baptism in this parish is recorded -- Samuel Allen, child of Samuel Allen and Elizabeth, again, this time son of Elizabeth Wohlmann and a different, perhaps related, Samuel Allen.

If Samuel died, leaving Elizabeth widowed, she might have had the child Ann with her at the Wohlmann house. This Ann.

Ann would have made her own way by the 1841 census, by which time her mother and William Ward had moved across the river with their son John Christian Ward. Ann in the 1841 census proves hard to find as it does not give place of birth, merely Yes or No as to whether born in the county.

Ann Allen Mansell therefore would not be part of the direct line of the Wohlmann family, but could well have cleared out her mother Elizabeth Sarah's belongings when she died and taken possession of the Ward and Wohlmann papers to pass down her own line.
